Managing the Melt

Edmonton weather has had us on a roller coaster, from extreme freezing temperatures to some very sunny days above zero, all within days of one another. Because of these extreme up’s and down’s, it is important to know how to manage the sudden melt efficiently for your home. Here are some tips to help you manage the quickly changing temperatures for the rest of this winter season: 

MELT MANAGEMENT 101

Usually we are preparing for the “big melt” in time for spring, but as the temperatures have shot up so quickly after deep freezes this season, it’s important to adjust your seasonal maintenance routine to include regular checks on your downspouts, eaves, walkways and the side of your home. Here’s what you can do to keep them in check:

• Be mindful of the melt and plan accordingly. After a deep freeze, an extreme rise in temperatures can cause excess melting off your roof, which can cause dripping from your eaves onto your walkway. Keep an eye on these areas and be sure to swoop any puddles away from high traffic areas while your home manages the melting ice and snow.
• Make sure to put your downspouts down in prep for warm weather. Watch the forecast for days when above-zero temperatures are expected and be sure to point your downspout down so it can keep melting snow and ice flowing away from your home. As well, if the forecast calls for another deep freeze, simply put them back up to avoid pooled freezing. 
• Keep the side of your home safe from water pooling. It’s important to watch for any sort of pooling or puddles next to your home to avoid leaks from overwhelming melts. You can safely shovel or sweep water away from the side of your home to assist in leak prevention.
